Most people start with standard mercury lamps, but those can be a bit shallow. Gallium-doped lamps are different. They shift the UV light into that 300nm to 400nm window, which is a fancy way of saying they can actually get through the thick stuff. The “Skin Over” Problem Here’s the thing: with standard lamps, you often run into a frustrating issue where the top of your coating looks perfect, but the bottom is still wet. It “skins over.” Then, a few days later, the whole thing peels or bubbles. It’s a nightmare. Gallium lamps fix this by pushing the energy deeper into the material. It’s the difference between a light tan and a deep soak. You get a cure that goes all the way through, so your work actually stays put. Watch the Heat But there’s a catch. These lamps run hot. Really hot. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, you’ll start seeing the ends of the tubes turn black. That’s a bad sign—it means your lamps are burning out way faster than they should. And a quick tip: check your reflector alignment before you flip the switch. I’ve seen cases where a tiny 2mm shift in the focal point killed the curing speed by 15%. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a smooth run and a bottleneck. Making It Work for Your Line We don’t believe in just tossing a tube in a box and calling it a day.
