
Getting the Most Out of Your High-Pressure Mercury Lamps
If you’re in the printing business, you already know that high-pressure mercury lamps are the real heavy lifters. They do the dirty work. We build these lamps to hit that sweet spot in the light spectrum—the kind that actually triggers the photoinitiators in your inks and coatings so everything dries perfectly across the board.
How they actually work
Basically, these lamps create an electric arc through vaporized mercury. Because the internal pressure is so high, it pushes out intense UVC and UVB radiation. That’s what makes the ink polymerize and harden almost instantly. For the smaller or mid-sized shops, it’s all about the balance. You want enough wattage and the right tube length to get the job done, but you don’t want to push your power supply until it screams.
The build and the heat (The part that matters)
We use high-purity fused quartz for the glass. Why? Because it doesn’t “cloud over” or block the UV rays over time. Plus, we keep the end-caps standard. We want these to be drop-in replacements—no hacking your rig or spending hours on a workaround. But here is the thing:you have to manage the heat. These lamps throw off a ton of infrared heat along with the UV. If your airflow is sluggish or your reflectors are looking pitted and worn, you’re asking for trouble. Your tubes will burn out way too fast, or worse, you’ll end up warping your substrate.
Making it work for your shop
The best part about custom UV lamps is that you don’t have to drop a fortune on a brand-new press just to run a new, complex ink. We just match the voltage and wattage to how fast your conveyor is moving. Sure, cranking up the wattage makes the ink dry faster, but it puts more stress on your ballasts. It’s a trade-off. We handle these specs so you aren’t paying for some massive industrial system you don’t actually need. You get exactly the power and size your machine requires to get that ink dry before it ever hits the stacker. Simple as that.
